Professor Eric Abrahamson is the Hughie E. Mills Professor of Business and the Faculty Leader, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University. He holds degrees from New York University (Ph.D. and MPhil, Beta Gamma Sigma). After teaching at New York University, professor Abrahamson joined the Columbia Business School faculty in 1989.

Professor Abrahamson’s work bridges theory and practice.  His research, writing and teaching are centered inside the University, but they also take him outside its walls. Inside the University, he focuses on scholarly research that informs his teaching of Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students. His books and executive education programs, however, also reach many practicing leaders and managers.

This website lays out both his theoretical and applied work. With respect to applied work, Professor Abrahamson has taught executives in many organizations around the world. Professor Abrahamson has also written two books targeted at audiences of professional managers. His first book Change Without Pain published by the Harvard Business School Press, was awarded the top business books of the year ranking by Strategy and Business, and was ranked by them as the best book for 2004 on the topic of Change Management.  Professor Abrahamson’s most recent book A Perfect Mess, 2007, has been widely publicized and translated into twenty-three languages.

Professor Abrahamson grounds his teaching and writing in scholarly research. He has authored numerous scientific studies of leaders, managers, and their organizations in top-ranked academic journals. This scholarly work both targets audiences of other professors and informs his classes at Columbia Business School.

As an educator at Columbia Business School, Professor Abrahamson teaches students earning their Masters of Business Administration (MBA), their Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) and their Doctorate of Philosophy in Management (Ph.D.).  In these capacities, he teaches classes about leadership, organizational problem solving, managing change, and how leaders and managers should use of power and influence in order to overcome resistance to their strategic goals.
